Silver has been used for jewellery making throughout history and is a durable and beautiful material. To ensure your silver jewellery retains its shine and does not tarnish, proper care is essential. Here are our best tips.

If you notice your silver jewellery starting to oxidise – that is, becoming discoloured and losing its shine – there are simple ways to refresh it.
To remove oxidation and restore the jewellery’s shine, you can use a polishing cloth to buff the silver. The cloth contains a very fine polishing compound and is impregnated with agents that counteract oxidation. You can find polishing cloths here.
Using a so-called silver dip quickly removes discolouration from silver jewellery. It is a liquid in which you immerse the piece for a few seconds, allowing the oxidation to dissolve chemically. Silver dip is available from specialist retailers.

Silver is a living material that naturally reacts with air and moisture, which can cause it to darken over time – a process known as oxidation.
At Efva Attling Stockholm, we work exclusively with recycled and nickel-free silver, as silver is a finite resource and reuse is the most sustainable option. We have been completely nickel-free since our founding in 1996. Nickel is often used in fashion jewellery to create a hard, high-shine surface and to prevent oxidation, but we choose to avoid it in favour of more skin-friendly materials. If you want to reduce the risk of your silver darkening, there are a few simple things to keep in mind:
Wipe your jewellery regularly
Use a silver polishing cloth to keep your jewellery free from make-up, skin oils and pollution. By wiping your jewellery from time to time, you remove dirt and preserve its shine. It will look as good as new.
Keep jewellery away from chlorinated and salt water
Salt water and chlorinated water can damage the silver. Therefore, remove your jewellery when in contact with water to prevent it from losing its lustre.
Remove jewellery at night
This is mainly recommended to avoid unnecessary wear—take off your jewellery before going to bed. This protects it from becoming scratched unnecessarily.
Store separately
Keep your silver pieces in their own space in your jewellery storage to avoid oxidation from contact with other pieces.
