Care advice for gold jewellery

Gold’s natural beauty develops over time, and with proper care its lustre can last for generations. Yellow and white gold each have their own unique character, shaped by the composition of the alloy, which requires different care.

How to preserve the lustre of gold

Gold is a precious yet relatively soft metal, though more durable than, for example, silver. Over time, the surface may develop signs of wear—especially on rings—which is a natural part of the material’s character. With careful handling, the jewellery’s lustre can be maintained over time.

Avoid chemicals and contact with water
Salt water, chlorine and cleaning agents can affect the metal surface. We recommend removing your jewellery when swimming, showering, cleaning or exercising.

Store separately
Store your jewellery in its original box or in a soft pouch to protect it from scratches caused by other pieces. Our jewellery boxes are ideal for storage, equally suitable for use at home or while travelling.

Cleaning and ongoing care
Clean your jewellery gently in lukewarm water with a mild soap. If needed, use a soft brush, rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. To maintain its shine, it is recommended to wipe the jewellery regularly to remove skin oils, perfume and make-up.

How to care for white gold and red gold

White gold – bright and sophisticated
White gold is an alloy of gold and light-coloured metals such as palladium or silver. To achieve its clear, white finish, it is coated with a thin layer of rhodium, which enhances the colour and adds extra shine. The rhodium plating is durable but can wear over time, particularly on jewellery worn daily. To restore the jewellery’s original lustre, the rhodium layer can be renewed. Re-plating is easily carried out by a jeweller.

Red gold – warm and timeless
Red gold gets its characteristic tone from a higher proportion of copper in the alloy. It is a durable material, but like all gold, the surface may develop marks over time. Scratches and signs of wear are a natural result of use and can be gently addressed. Our jewellers can restore the jewellery’s lustre through professional polishing. You are warmly welcome to visit one of our concept stores for service.

Both red and white gold are perfectly suitable for everyday wear, but as with all metals, rings in particular may develop small dents and scratches over time. This is usually no problem for our jewellers to repair—simply bring in your piece for polishing and have it returned looking as good as new.
